Drainage for Pleural Effusion and Ascites

PCD

Pleural effusion or ascites means abnormal fluid accumulation in the chest or abdominal cavity,
which can cause shortness of breath or abdominal distension.
In such cases, PCD (Percutaneous Catheter Drainage) can safely drain the fluid and relieve symptoms.

PCD Procedure

PCD inserts a thin catheter through the skin to
drain pleural effusion or ascites outside the body.
It is minimally invasive and can quickly improve breathing difficulty and abdominal discomfort.

When PCD Is Needed

01

Ascites Drainage

Performed when fluid
accumulates abnormally in the abdominal cavity.

02

Pleural Effusion Drainage

Performed when fluid
accumulates abnormally in the pleural space.

03

Abscess Drainage

Performed when pus has collected in the body
and must be evacuated.

Drainage Catheter Precautions

Avoid kinking or dislodging the catheter
If discharged with the catheter in place, disinfect every 1–2 days
Keep the drainage bag always below the insertion site

If you notice any of the following,
please contact the hospital.

Catheter is blocked or has come out
Drainage amount suddenly increases or decreases
High fever or severe pain
Signs of infection at the procedure site
