Vascular Access for Long-Term Treatment

PICC

Central Vein

Central veins are large veins located near the heart. Since they quickly and widely distribute blood throughout the body, they serve as important pathways for effectively delivering medicines or nutrition.

Repeated drug administration can distort veins or cause inflammation,
and if medicines leak outside the vein, complications may occur.
To prevent this, a central venous catheter is inserted
to safely carry out anti-cancer therapy.

Types of Central Venous Catheters

PICC

When is
a PICC Used?

01When nutritional support is needed for weeks to months

02When anti-cancer therapy is scheduled

03When veins are weakened or difficult to find

Long-term Treatment More Comfortably and Safely

01

Reduced Pain from Injections

Patients can experience less
pain and discomfort from repeated needle sticks.

02

Preventing Vein Irritation from Anti-Cancer Medicines

It reduces the risk of anti-cancer medicines leaking outside the vein,
which can damage surrounding tissue and muscle
or cause burning sensations and irritation.

03

Continuous Treatment Possible

Once inserted, it can be used for several weeks to months,
ensuring uninterrupted treatment.

PICC Duration

A PICC can generally be maintained for about 3–6 months.
It can be managed through outpatient or home care,
allowing long-term treatment without hospitalization.

PICC Precautions After Insertion

Avoid lifting heavy objects
Do not measure blood pressure on the arm with the PICC
Make sure the PICC line does not get submerged in water
Use a waterproof sleeve or waterproof bandage when showering

If you experience any of the following symptoms,
please contact your hospital.

Redness, swelling, or bruising around the insertion site
Fever or difficulty breathing
Chest pain or changes in heartbeat
If the line feels dislodged or blocked
